Wells Hosiery and Apparel in Asheboro, NC receives Environmental Stewardship Award as a result of implementing an energy efficient lighting project
Wells Hosiery and Apparel recently completed a project to upgrade their existing lighting systems. The primary objective of the project was to reduce electricity costs and improve lighting quality; however, at the same time their reduced electricity usage has resulted in less greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity production.
Southpoint Solutions worked with Wells Hosiery to develop and implement this project utilizing the patented technology of Orion Energy Systems. The existing lighting system, which consisted of over 1,089 inefficient high-intensity discharge (HID) and T12 light fixtures, was replaced with Orion's high-intensity fluorescent (HIF) technology.
As a result of the project, Wells Hosiery expects to cut its light-related electricity usage, and the associated costs, by almost 56 percent. An added benefit is that lower electricity usage means less fossil fuel emissions associated with electricity production. By completing this project, Wells Hosiery has indirectly reduced the amount of air pollution by 308.6 tons of carbon dioxide which has an equivalent impact of saving 38,332 gallons of gasoline annually or planting 85 acres of trees.
Wells Hosiery is always looking for ways to stay on the cutting edge of fashion trends while also improving their manufacturing efficiencies. Matt Anglemyer, VP of Sales and Operation states, “Wells Hosiery and Apparel was looking to save energy and add light to the sewing floor to create less shadowing so the employees are able to work more efficiently. We were able to achieve this through our recent lighting project with Southpoint.”
Rick Hayden, Sewing Maintenance and Safety Manager and Mickey Smith, VP of Hosiery Manufacturing both worked closely with Southpoint Solutions during the installation of the project. Rick Haden states, “Southpoint Solutions bent over backwards for us and they were very easy to work with during the process.” “They never complained and worked around our schedule to get the product installed without interrupting production,” stated Mickey Smith.
Wells Hosiery has over 30 years of manufacturing experience. In the 90’s Wells Hosiery Mills and Apparel was created from three strong industry leaders, Asheboro Sox, Realistic Hosiery, and Wells Hosiery Mills. This merge created synergies that allowed Wells Hosiery to be on the cutting edge of product development in ladies apparel, athletic wear and ladies hosiery.
