SPX’s Ocala, FL manufacturing plant receives Environmental Stewardship Award as a result of implementing energy efficient lighting project
Ocala, FL multi-industry manufacturer SPX recently completed a project to upgrade their existing lighting systems to reduce electricity costs and improve lighting quality. At the same time their reduced electricity usage has resulted in less greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity production.
Southpoint Solutions worked with SPX to develop and implement this project utilizing the patented technology of Orion Energy Systems. The existing lighting system, which consisted of over 474 inefficient T12 strip fixtures and high-intensity discharge (HID) light fixtures, was replaced with Orion's high-intensity fluorescent (HIF) technology.
As a result of the project, SPX expects to cut its light-related electricity usage, and the associated costs, by almost 59 percent. An added benefit is that lower electricity usage means less fossil fuel emissions associated with electricity production. By completing this project, SPX has indirectly reduced the amount of air pollution by 286.8 tons of carbon dioxide which has an equivalent impact of saving 35,619 gallons of gasoline annually or planting 79 acres of trees.
The desire for continuous improvement is deeply ingrained in SPX’s culture, and the Company strives to continuously improve the management of their environmental responsibilities and develop sustainable solutions to their environmental challenges. Keith Douglas, EHS Manager of SPX, states that “SPX is continually looking for ways to improve the environment. Southpoint Solutions offered an easy way to do the right thing while improving operations and the bottom line.”
Southpoint Solutions strives with every project to get as much energy savings with each lighting project and is evident in the project with SPX. Jeff Burdette, Production Manager of SPX states that “Southpoint Solutions has overachieved expectations for the energy savings and we are extremely happy with the results.”
