Saint-Gobain awarded the Environmental Stewardship Award by Southpoint Solutions as a result of implementing an energy efficient lighting project at its Travelers Rest, SC facility
Travelers Rest, SC, July 17,2013— Southpoint Solutions has honored the Saint-Gobain Abrasives Plant in Travelers Rest, S.C., with a special energy award for its upgrade to its existing lighting systems to reduce electricity costs and improve lighting quality, resulting in reduced electricity usage and less greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity production.
Southpoint Solutions worked with Saint-Gobain to develop and implement this project utilizing the patented technology of Orion Energy Systems. The solution designed by Southpoint Solutions allowed Saint-Gobain to replace more than 260 inefficient light fixtures with Orion's energy-efficient high-intensity fluorescent technology, while improving light levels and quality. Installation of controls on many of the new light fixtures allowed Saint-Gobain to use even less energy, resulting in additional cost savings.
As a result of the project, Saint-Gobain expects to cut its light-related electricity usage, and the associated costs, by almost 52 percent at the Travelers Rest plant. An added benefit is that lower electricity usage means less fossil fuel emissions associated with electricity production. By completing this project in Travelers Rest, Saint-Gobain has indirectly reduced the amount of air pollution by 142.7 tons of carbon dioxide which has an equivalent impact of saving 17,721 gallons of gasoline annually or planting 39 acres of trees.
Saint-Gobain has set ambitious targets for environmental stewardship, including reducing CO2 emissions at company locations, while continuing its commitment to reducing energy consumption. John Zech, Purchasing Agent for Saint-Gobain Abrasives, says “While there were many objectives for undertaking this project in Travelers Rest, we are pleased to see the positive impact this project is already making on our environment with the added benefit of reducing our energy costs.”
Southpoint Solutions worked diligently to provide the right technology and design to meet Saint- Gobain’s needs. “We enjoyed working with Southpoint during each phase of the project. The proposal was extremely easy to read and Trebor Davis was very knowledgeable about the product and did a great job explaining the process with us,” says Zech.
