Duke Energy is proposing a 15% increase for North and South Carolina businesses!
North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper says he's opposing Duke Energy Corp.'s proposal to raise the rates consumers pay for electricity. The utilities commission has been holding hearings to get public feedback and of course the general consensus is an astounding no! It appears that the utility commission is going to try to hold the increase at no more than 5%. That's obviously better than 15% but it's no small amount when you are paying utilities for a massive facility or warehouse as many of our customers do.
This leads consumers to ask "why now, doesn't Duke Energy know these are hard economic times for businesses and individuals?" To play devil's advocate Duke Energy says since 2009 they have invested more than $4.8 billion to repair and modernize an outdated and aging electric system. In the Carolinas, the average age of Duke Energy Carolinas' coal-fired plants is 61 years. Duke also states other factors such as increased environmental regulations and projected growth and demand. Duke states that over the next 20 years North Carolina's population is projected to increase by 4 million people, and South Carolina's by 1.1 million!
